Remember the 12 month rule for de-cluttering your attic
Attics are great spaces to use for storing things we don't need to use regularly. But attics also become places to store things we may never use again. This can add up to a lot of clutter in your attic and also a loss of precious space. Use the 12 month rule for these items – 'If you haven't used it in over a year, get rid of it'. Better yet, host a yard sale and turn your unused items into cash!
Check vents for signs of built up dust, etc.
If you notice that your allergies, asthma, or otherwise seem to be aggravated indoors, you may have an issue with air quality. If you see that your vents are clogged with dust, that's likely the reason. Professionals can clear it out for you, particularly in the attic where it tends to accumulate undisturbed, but you can get started yourself by using an electrostatically charged cloth that will cause dust to stick to it or using a duster on the vents themselves.
Test your insulation periodically for signs of age
For most with the blanket type of fiberglass, it's fairly simple as long as you take safety precautions. Wearing gloves is crucial, because fiberglass causes rashes if touched by bare skin, as is a face mask to avoid breathing it in and damaging the lungs. Then, you can press on the insulation to see if any crumbling occurs. If it does, that means your insulation is not working as well as it should due to age and you should have it replaced.
